Scott,

Thanks for the image.  I do know that there is a gap around the "U" shaped captivator plate around the gear leg.  The gap is about 1mm but the gear does not come in contact with the "U" when I push the nose around.  What is the prefered way of shimming the gap?  What materials do you use?  How should they be mounted to the aluminum plate?

If the implanted metal plate in the rubber bumper is deformed - or if the captivator plate, or "U" strap was improperly installed - a gap will occur between the nose gear strut and the "U" shape strap.  As the aircraft bounces down the taxiway, the 'play' caused by the space between the strut and the "U" strap allows the strut to have excessive forward<>aft travel.  The extra travel may cause the nose strut fairing to rub the underside of the fuselage (making a noise).  I guess it's possible the strut might make a noise when it comes in contact with the strap.  To explore this possibility, raise the nose of aircraft off the ground (using a padded saw horse positioned under the forward edge of the canard bulkhead.  Raise the nose enough so that the nose wheel is above the ground, say 2 to 3".  Then using arm force, push the strut from front to back.  There should very little, if any, loose play.  If you detect loose play, then plan on inserting a shim between the "U" strap and the nose strut to take away the play.  Confirm the captivator assembly is tight against the strut.

Clicking...  Hmmm.  I do remember hearing that when side-load is placed on the nose wheel while taxing.  What are the failure point I need to examine and how would I address the problem?

As long as the bushings are secure, the captivator plate is tight, the "U" clamp is bolted tight to the front rubber, and there are no cracks in the strut, you're fine!
The nose will "sway" a little when pushed from side to side.  This is normal.  You should not hear any 'clicking' or mechanical movement of the strut, however.

For a Std FG aircraft (SUV) how much play is normal for the nose gear strut?  My nose gear has a bit of play both fore-aft and left-right. It is not much.  Perhaps it moves about 1" fore - aft and ½" left - right at the nose wheel fork attach point with the nose lifted and pushed by hand at the bottom.  Given the way the whole assembly is mounted (at the pivot point up-top and captivator plate and rubber shock against the bulkhead) I am guessing that some amount of movement is normal. The lateral movement, however concerned me a bit and I checked the knurled bushing that is potted into the keel and that part is not moving at all.

Should I be concerned about this?
