REFLECTOR: Painting

Jim,
That was my thought, to protect them and to keep them from peeling off when washing or
waxing the airplane. I understand some paints do not adhere and others attack the vinyl.
Do you remember the brand of clear you used?

It is commonly done and smooths the sharp edge and airflow. More importantly it helps to
keep the decals from peeling off. I have my N numbers on the outside of the winglet and
they are decals custom made for size and to match the slope of the winglet. They are then
covered with clear coat and I haven't had any problems.

Has anyone tried to clear-coat them? Just a thought.

When Cessna started to build single engine planes again they used stickers with very bad
results. Many had to be replaced over and over again.

I was wondering what the collective thought of this group was on the use of decals instead
of a painted design on the airplane. I was talking to a RV builder the other day and he
suggested them as a cheaper alternative to painting on a design over the white paint.
Easy to repair also. He also mentioned that it was very popular in the RV community. I
can't get over the feeling the it just doesn't seem right to use decals. Sounds kind of
cheesy to me. The Velocity is as gourgous as a beautifully restored hot rod. You
certainly won't put decals on a hot rod. Thoughts from the group??
