REFLECTOR: elevator cuff was Brake authority

I never installed the cuffs although they were included in my 1999 173 Elite RG kit. I do have VG's. I can easily hold the nose wheel off the ground when landing - then let it down gently. As John Dibble (I think) mentioned a while back, your success will depend a lot on how well you set your elevator trim while on short final.

A friend in Hilton Head had the cuffs, removed them and installed VG's because he was sick and tired of the nose wheel plopping down no matter how hard he tried to fly the canard down to the ground. After these two mods, he had a big smile on his face!!!! (He was a B24 pilot and flew a Long EZ before he built his Velocity Std with Std Wing.)

  Just to confuse the issue.

My plane had cuffs on it when I bought it. I was "told" by a Velocity A&P at the factory that they were to make the airplane less elevator "twitchy" and to eliminate the canard stall porpoise. The cuff as a by product did increase the stall speed of the canard by 3 to 5 knots. I can attest to the fact that configured with the cuff there was no porpoise at all, just a gentle stall with its accompanying high rate of descent. An attempt to make it fly more like a 172....

I removed the cuffs to reduce the stall speed and bring back the twitchy elevator control.

    Al,

The way I understand it, the elevator cuffs were one of three things done to address the deep stall problem. Your current main wing was redesigned and the canard was shortened. The cuffs are no longer needed. They were a modification for existing Velocities at that time. I received cuffs with my kit but never installed them. Their purpose is to increase the stall speed of the elevator which would explain your high stall speed.

I concur with Larry - 10KIAS makes a big difference.

My canard stalls at 60KIAS with just me, 65KIAS with

      two people up front.

I still have about half the width of the elevator cuff on the elevators. It gives a very gentle pitch-buck at stall, I've never felt a lack of elevator authority; and I never have full aft stick on landing. However; would removing the rest of the cuff reduce the stall speed?

I have my ground idle set to about 500 RPMs (Lyc

IO-540 with two mags) which is pretty much as slow as

      it will run

My engine idle is about 850; that's about 210 rpm on the prop.
