REFLECTOR: Fuel venting issue

The varmints - a smaller bee than mud daubers will also nest in the little bitty pitot tube holes.
Had it happen on our Cessna a few years back. No airspeed indication on take off. It was not easy to remove and clear the opening.

Well the check valve keeps the flow going just one way- into the tanks- and also in the unfortunate case of a roll over, would keep fuel from draining into the cabin as well- I am pretty sure that it is the factory recommended setup now- the vent line goes up to the roof line inside before exiting the bottom of the aircraft just in front of the sump drain for normal operation. I just figure that I don't want to be a glider due to one determined mud dauber ( which are really really plentiful here in Texas by the way) I have seen them build a nest in less than 30 minutes, so even a $100 ( currently $150 due to high fuel prices ) hamburger stop could possibly be trouble.... the pito holes are probably too small for them , but that vent line would be just about right.. even the recessed screw holes on my power tools are generally plugged up by the end of each summer- and I need to clean them out with a screw driver- kind of nuts....

I have a hard time feeling good about having a fuel vent line open to the interior of the cabin...

I've seen a 15,000 gallon steel tank collapse by a plugged vent, and it's not pretty... I don't have this one way valve and wondered why I would need it? I guess this scenario answers my question. {snip} Scott ------------------------------------------------------------------------ _______________________________________________To change your email address, visit http://www.tvbf.org/mailman/listinfo/reflector Visit the gallery! www.tvbf.org/galleryuser:pw
