REFLECTOR: Updraft cooling

Andy,
I recommend updraft cooling - as you first proposed - with this model engine. Check with the RV web site - I believe they sell a baffle kit for the IO-540, which can be adapted to the Velocity cowling. The exhaust exiting out the top cowling helps quiet the nose signature to those on the ground (this is a good thing!). There is nothing "wrong" with the armpit scoops when coupled with updraft cooling.

I have a IO-540E1A5 that I am going to install on my XLRG. This engine is supposed to be an updraft cooled engine with the exhaust exiting the top of the cylinders. My question is two part, I had resigned myself to install the older style armpit cooling and have the exhaust exit the top of the cowling either as six individual exhaust pipes or as two exhaust pipes Y-ed to three cylinders each as velocity's stock exhaust does. I have seen several comments on the reflector of other builders that also have the top mounted exhaust systems, I would like some feedback on how others routed their exhaust and if anyone has adapted this configuration engine to the down draft NACA scoops. I am installing the NACA scoops but was only going to use this for engine air intake and possibly for aft oil cooler cooling. I always thought that the top exhaust would be too hot to allow the composite cooling duct to be installed on the top of the engine to use the NACA down draft cooling, from the conversations on the reflector of the ceramic coatings, I am now contemplating going with the NACA cooling. Is there anyone using the top exhaust with the NACA down draft cooling? Pictures would be great.
