REFLECTOR: Reflector Digest, Vol 43, Issue 22- Info for Aerocomposite Prop Hub

Mark,

Aerocomposites asked me for the distance form the starter ring gear face to
the end of the cowl when I ordered my prop. At the time I had not trimmed
the back of the cowl yet so the exact dimension was not that important to
me. Anything from 1-1/2" to 2-1/2" would have worked. I split the
difference and told them 2". I was considering telling them the smaller
distance thinking, the further forward the prop, the better the weight and
balance I would get. Also I would get better ground clearance during
rotation on takeoff and flare on landing. (I know, don't flare).

In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't do that. The main problem I ran into is
installation and removal of the cowl. It is so close to the prop now it is
very tricky getting it on and off. After doing it about 100 times I finally
figured exactly how to turn the prop back and forth and twist the cowl for
clearance. I also had to cut clearance in the upper cowl flange over the
NACA intakes so I could pivot the cowl straight up without pulling it back
first. If my prop was another 1/2" forward, my cowl would not fit without
more modifications.

In the process of figuring this out, I scratched the paint on the prop
pretty good.

As far as the distance to the firewall, I don't know. I'm not sure I could
even measure it accurately with the engine in the way.

By the way, I have an IO-540 with the Velocity engine mount in a XLRG.

Darrell

Aerocomposite Prop Hub

I need help from any of you who have installed an Aerocomposite prop. Mine
is in process at the factory. They asked me for the measurement from the
prop flange to the end of the cowl. At the suggestion of the factory, I told
them that they had already done props for Velocity XL's with IO540s and that
since the airframe, engine and mount were the same they should simply use
the same dimensions as they had for prior customers.

Of course, nothing is that simple when building a kitplane as we have all
figured out sooner or later. It turns out that at least some of the prop
hubs they have provided (e.g.for Terry Miles) have been the wrong length.

My engine is currently undergoing a teardown and inspection at Penn Yan and
I can't simply mount and measure. Obviously, I can get the measurement from
the firewall to the end of the cowling. What I need is the measurement from
firewall to prop flange on an IO540 in an XL. I would GREATLY appreciate it
if someone could provide me with the measurement. I hear that Rene Dugas has
a correct Aerocomposite hub but I have not been able to reach him.

I look forward to any help you can give.

Thanks,

Mark Riley

The things that changed my mind were:

   1. Extra Build Time (Whatever time you think it will take to make the
mod for your Velo, double it!)
   2. Reliability of a known quantity. (I am flying my family here.)
   3. Resale Value. (Should I ever sell the Velo down the road.)
   4. Less Time to Fly Off (With an aircraft engine, you have a good
chance of only needing 25 hours to fly off.)

You can go on with this list. There are so many more reasons in the Yes
Column for aircraft engines vs other options it is very lopsided.
