REFLECTOR: Questions with new Franklin

A quart every 3 hours isn't excessive and I would be very surprised if you noticed a difference in consumption or leakage by going to a multi viscosity oil.

I'm using straight 100 (50W). Does this make any difference in terms of leaks or consumption? I burn a qt every 3 hours.

A second drop came when I replaced my mineral oil with Elite 20W50 at 20 hours. I can now climb to altitude at 225F with OAT of 96F and cruise at 195F. Oil temp. also got gradually lower with time during the first 50 hours.

    Jerry,

I've been flying a Franklin powered SERG for ten years and have never had
any build up of oil anywhere in my intake manifold. If you do, something is wrong.

The only oil leak problem I had early in the fly off period, was solved by replacing
the crank shaft seal. Other than that the engine is bone dry.

Like you, I only have one nose oil cooler, 5/8 oil line and a very aggressive scoop
at the exit of the oil cooler. My high oil, CHT;s and EGT's were resolved by splitting
the single plenum supplied by Velocity, into two separate plenums which seals much
better than the single one. 216 degrees in cruise isn't too bad for a new engine, at
24/2550 in cruise my oil temps on a 90 degree day at 6500 is around 205 degrees.
I can climb in Florida's heat to 8000 feet without leveling to cool down.

For the first 25 hours, use only mineral oil and try to keep the RPM between 2550
and 2650. The Franklin is an outstanding engine and loves to run in that range.

If you need more info. contact me off line and I will give you my phone number.

I have some questions about a new Franklin engine. First of all, I accumulate darker engine oil in my intake manifold. After only a 30 minute flight, I will have about 2 tablespoons accumulated in the prop end of the intake manifold on each side and it will be dripping out of the crossover pipe connection. Where does this come from and is there a danger in taking a longer flight? Secondly, I am told that I should break in the engine at full power to increase manifold pressure to better seat the rings. My field is at 8200 ft and I have difficulty getting high manifold pressure. Also, the handbook encourages not getting above 13 kts. Is there a way to do everything? Thirdly, I am having trouble with high oil temperatures. I have one oil cooler in the nose and 5/8 inch hoses to the front. I have put in the stiffer spring. I get up to about 216 under steady low power cruise and it increases when I land. I suspect the answer is to put in a second oil cooler but I am out of room under the cowling. Suggestions?
