REFLECTOR: Transponder Antenna

The most common example of line of sight blocking mentioned by Scott below would be.. An antenna mounted somewhere forward in the fuselage and you climb out away from the ground antenna. There is potential that the firewall will block the signal. Mounting the antenna in the strakes could interfere with signal in turns (other folks discussed this option). Best position to mount antenna is in the bottom aft of fuselage as Scott mentions below. I mounted mine between gear bulkhead and firewall on fuselage floor. I had room there since I have a FG.

he standard EZ location is right below the rear seat. The entire rear seat pan is covered with aluminum for the ground plane and to shield the rear occupant from the RF. The minimum ground plane is a 8 inch diameter circle or octagon.

In side or out of the fiberglass makes no difference to the radio waves, however if its inside something else inside that is made of metal could block its line of sight path to the ground antenna. In other words if inside don't mount it near something that would impede its sight to the ground at a reasonable angle.

I wrote a few weeks ago asking about best location for a transponder antenna. I have a new "sharkfin" type antenna I plan to locate under the copilot seat. Does anyone have information/experience about the difference in performance if the antenna penetrates the fuselage so that its surface is outside vs. mounted inside the fuselage? Also, how about the size of the aluminum plate that serves as a ground plane?
Thanks,
Manny Lewis
