Tom,

Here is a site that says that they do Chevy V8 aircraft engine conversions www.vestav8.com . I looked into the auto conversion route and felt that the PRSU was the weak link in the process. I don't have any first hand knowledge of this companies work or of what they claim. There are several other companies that will do this for you or you can do it for yourself. Again everything except the PRSU (prop speed reduction units). I chose to use IO-540 because of the time savings to the build process and the safety aspects to a proven aircraft engine. I would estimate that a non standard install would add 500 to a 1000 hours to your build. There are a lot of other sites on the web with a lot of other opinions. These are just my thoughts there are pros and cons for either option I chose the more traveled route.

  So . in contemplating my next project (which may or may not be a V) . what is the wisdom here regarding powerful automobile engines.  I want something comparable to more powerful that the IO-550 or the IO-540.

  -Do you have to convert your auto engine?  Or are there companies that do it for you?

  -Are they heavier than standard aircraft engines?

  -Do they require a lot of fabrication and modification?  What about engine mounts?

  -Are they quieter?  Do they run smoother?

  -Do you need gear reduction drives?

  -Do they end up being cheaper?  Or more expensive?
