REFLECTOR: Where to put your AHRS

I put mine in the strake (outboard) in the junction between the strake
and the wing. It is an excellent place away from interference ... but a
bitch to change out if ever needed.

Mine was purchased years ago when the prices were not very good. I
think the whole setup with two MFDs, AHRS, ADU, etc was about $30K. I
think you can get the same thing now for close to half that.

It was made by (then) Sierra Flight Systems which is now Chelton.
Direct-To Avionics is their outlet for the experimental market.

Now you get a lot more choices in the systems than back then but it
seems that Chelton unit still holds some of the features edge (and the
price to go with it, too).

Fiber Optic Gyro ... Has the price come down?
I already deleted the previous posts. Who makes it? How much does it
cost?

have units that has separate AHRS and magnetometer. As it turns out,
mine is an integral unit. One black box that has inertial sensor,
magnetometer, fiber-optic gyro, all built in. I currently have the unit
on top of the sump tank and I see the attitude reading drops off as I
get above 40Kts or so. During the flight, usually in turns, the reading
would come back for a second or so but for the most part, they remain
off.

They told me that under the seat would be tricky since movement of the
seats will affect the magnetic field. They also told me to keep the
unit close to the aircraft's rotational axis and away from major
high-current wires. Well, on a Velocity, that pretty much rules out the
whole plane...
