The fuel burn issue is valid. That is why I was looking at a copter engine,
designed for lower altitudes. There is someone at Deer Valley with the
Alison setup in a Lance. Need to look into it further. Of course, you can't
get the plane insured with a Turbine!!!

A Canadian Fellow put a turboprop with five blade prop on a Velocity a
few years back. He developed fuel exhaustion in San Diego and crashed
short of the runway killing both the pilot and potential buyer.
Beautiful plane with side stick controls and Corvette Seats it survived
the belly landing well. Turbines drink fuel voraciously. I am building
a Turbine Legend with a Walters 700+ shaft HP and expect 35 to 40
gallons/hr. @ 350 mph. If you go turbine you must go with Oxygen and
fly high >15k ft. for efficiency. Two hour range in a Velocity with a
VNE of 200 kts to avoid flutter will give you terrific climb and
terrific fuel burn. An IO-540 will get you 185 knts at 24 sq. @ 15
gallons/hr and 4.5 hrs of transport. The Continental slightly better.
A Supercharged engine is another choice.

Matt,

I am thinking about going turboprop on my plane. I have looked at the
250,
PT-6, Innodyne and any others that I can get info on. I would be
interested
in any info you may have on available engines. I am building an XLRG
and I
am about a year away from installing an engine so I have plenty of time
yet.
I live in Lynnwood, Washington.

Hal,
There is a builder assist group in BC that specializes in T50-BO-8 Boeing
turbine installations. They are building a Velocity XL and plan on using
the turbine. http://www.gyrodynehelicopters.com/dash_history.htm
I understand that they have a few more units available with the appropriate
propeller speed reduction drive.
Call me on Tuesday morning and I'll find the contact information. This
might be a good option for you since they are close, and ... if you live in
Washington you have to go with a Boeing!

Hal,

I'm welling to assist with 1/3 of your decision--Innodyne, Affordable
Turbines or whatever they call themselves today. If history is any
predictor of the future, send me the deposit. I'll go out and party and
carouse...I'll have a great time and you'll get the same result as if
you send Innodyne the deposit. Yea, I know, it's not much of an offer
but I do what I can.

Chuck Jensen
P.S. Search archives on Reflector, RV List, Lancair List, or most
anywhere for a more detailed recounting of Innodyne.

I have the Std FG. It is a Fast Build Fuselage and the door hinges are in a
pocket, the top skin of the fuselage is still there and I scooped out the
foam between top and bottom. I don't remember much about it, it was a long
time ago - I'm a slooow builder. I think this was done as part of the fast
build. I just had to drill holes in the skin and the hinges. The door opens
fine.

I finished my pilots side door hinge install this weekend and found that It
was almost impossible to install the hinges flush. I started flush and had
to raise the hinges slightly above the top fuselage to give the door and
roof enough clearance to let the door open. The door skin and roof skin area
will hit without giving enough gap to allow the hinge to open. I would say
that the bulge of the hinge is maybe a 1/32 inch above the roof skin.

Remember that the nitrogen cylinder will likely push up anyway making the
door lift. Very disappointing after days of sanding- but likely outcome.
As the hinge wears the door lifts more.

That's what I wanted to do with mine also, but wanted to make sure that the
door would still open correctly before I spent all the time to make them
flush. What about water intrusion through the hinges?

On my aircraft, the top of the hinge is flush with the fuselage skin.
Looking tangentially to the curvature of the fuselage, you will not see the
hinge tops at all.

Need some feed back on how flush your door hinges are to the top of the
fuselage. The manual doesn't say how much or how little of the hinges should
be sticking up in the slip stream. If I follow the manual and attach my
hinges to the door first and don't add or remove any material to the
thickness of the door structure at the hinge, I would have about 1/8 inch of
the hinge above the door and top of the fuselage. Is this normal? The manual
makes one statement like you should have from the center of the hinge pin
above the door. Does everyone else have 1/2 of the hinge above the fuselage,
or am I reading this wrong? I also would like to know how you are supposed
to keep water from coming through the hinge when it rains. I intend to
construct a pocket under my hinges to channel any water out to the door seal
area to flow any water out around the door seal. Is this what anyone else
has done.
