REFLECTOR: Fuel Sight Gauges

Hmmm, I used a slightly larger drill than recommended, but not that much
larger- really, I am not sure why you can't just drill through with a 3/16
drill anyway- I will bet if you bought them directly from Vance, he would do
you at least some favor for replacement- seems like a good guy- I have not
fueled up yet, so I don't know- maybe you can just drill through from the
front, with larger drill, and weld back the clear plastic.

I tried to get engine start today, but could not get the injectors to fire
for some reason too damned hot in there to trouble shoot for too long,,,,,,,
:-(

Alex;

I installed one of Vance's sight gauges, and it is giving me trouble
(doesn't work), and I don't know why. The installation instructions are to
drill a small hole in the bulkhead at the top and bottom. I removed an area
of the inner skin and the foam core and reinforced with a couple plays of
fine BID, then drilled the 1/16" hole. The gauge initially responded just
fine. In the last few months it has not. Apparently the bottom hole had
become plugged.

Fortunately, because of where I placed the filler caps, I was able to put
some .040" safety wire on a stick and reach to where the hole is. After
some effort (can't see the hole) I was able to get the wire through both top
and bottom holes. The fuel level responded and I assumed everything was
fine.

A few days later it was plugged again. It is not from any debris in the
tanks, there isn't any. It appears that the hole in the white plastic
material of the back plate is perhaps swelling and closing the hole. That
is my only explanation at this point. It is possible that it is a
compatibility problem with auto fuel that I use, but I'd expect there are
EZs out there using mogas as well. I wonder if I'm the only one with this
issue.

Al

There is a guy here in Texas , Vance Atkinson that makes sight gauges for

Long EZ and Velocity- he molds the gauge out of clear plastic, then it bonds

to a white plastic backing, with fluorescent bead in there- really good

quality, and they are pretty much unbreakable, since they bond directly

against the fuel bulkhead.

What I would like is to put a little floating ball in there that is

smaller then the tube ID, but larger than the brass fitting ID.

The ball should be flourescent, so that an ultraviolet LED mounted above

will cause it to brightly glow.

Does anyone know where I can find such a beast?
