Fletch Air sells them for Grumman Tigers. I used them in my sight gauges and
they worked great

I would suggest testing your ball before use. The epoxy has a greater
density than fuels, if the volumetric ratio of epoxy/micro is skewed toward
the epoxy it may not float.

Alex;

I installed one of Vance's sight gauges, and it is giving me trouble
(doesn't work), and I don't know why. The installation instructions are to
drill a small hole in the bulkhead at the top and bottom. I removed an area
of the inner skin and the foam core and reinforced with a couple plays of
fine BID, then drilled the 1/16" hole. The gauge initially responded just
fine. In the last few months it has not. Apparently the bottom hole had
become plugged.

Fortunately, because of where I placed the filler caps, I was able to put
some .040" safety wire on a stick and reach to where the hole is. After
some effort (can't see the hole) I was able to get the wire through both top
and bottom holes. The fuel level responded and I assumed everything was
fine.

A few days later it was plugged again. It is not from any debris in the
tanks, there isn't any. It appears that the hole in the white plastic
material of the back plate is perhaps swelling and closing the hole. That
is my only explanation at this point. It is possible that it is a
compatibility problem with auto fuel that I use, but I'd expect there are
EZs out there using mogas as well. I wonder if I'm the only one with this
issue.

Al

There is a guy here in Texas , Vance Atkinson that makes sight gauges for

Long EZ and Velocity- he molds the gauge out of clear plastic, then it bonds

to a white plastic backing, with fluorescent bead in there- really good

quality, and they are pretty much unbreakable, since they bond directly

against the fuel bulkhead.

What I would like is to put a little floating ball in there that is

smaller then the tube ID, but larger than the brass fitting ID.

The ball should be flourescent, so that an ultraviolet LED mounted above

will cause it to brightly glow.

Does anyone know where I can find such a beast?

I think the use of peel ply make far more difference in whether or not you
have a leak than which weave of glass.

For fuel sealing surfaces, you definitely don't want to get carried away
with weight reduction - go ahead and make sure you have sufficient epoxy to
fill any voids, then use peel ply to give you a finished surface and pick up
any excess.

Keith Hallsten, XLFG

I would add a comment regarding the use of peel ply in this instance FWIW.
Peel ply works great on lay-ups for removing some of the excess epoxy, and
for preparing the surface for any lay-ups going over it. It prepares the
surface by forming many surface micro-cracks when it is peeled off. I don't
think that either of these particular functions are of value on surfaces
exposed to fuel. This is just a surface phenomenon, not effecting leaks,
but could exacerbate any effects of fuel on the epoxy.

Or it may just be that I am more sensitive to that particular issue using
mogas.
