I've looked through all my records and cant find anything but it is a Mitsubishi. I had to convert the multigrooved pulley to match my rpm range on the Soob engine.

  Hi Wayne,

Actually, the way the fan blades are turned doesn't really make any difference. They are centrifugal fans - forward facing blades only increases the delivered pressure at a somewhat reduced flow - but aircraft alternators turn so fast it doesn't really matter.

Do you have any part numbers for the alternator you are using?

I had an Hitachi that came with my Don George engine, but never could find a part number on it. Then, a wire broke in the brush assembly. I finally put a rebuilt Cessna alternator on my IO360 but from the 2000 hour experience on our 172, certified new aircraft alternators do not last too long either! (The Cessna alternator was rebuilt by the local alternator/starter shop - they replaced the cracked, certified case using a Chrysler part, put in new brushes - it has about 200 hours on it now). But it sure would be nice to know what Autozone alternator I could use.

There is an old Contact Magazine series by Paul Meisner wherein he describes the Nippodenso and the Hitachi (I think) alternators on riceburner cars. Paul designed the command and control systems on the Hubble Telescope (not the optics). He describes where to cut a lead so you can insert overvoltage protection. That is the main shortcoming and only significant difference between auto and aircraft alternators. There are two other differences between A/C and automotive alternators, the locking tabs on the bolts that hold the case together and if the auto alternator has an external fan it may turn the wrong direction. Both kinds now use silver bearing brushes. A few old style aircraft alternators have heavier mounting fixtures for the diodes.
My 90 amp riceburner alternator now has a trouble free 100 plus hours.

I have my engine down for some "modifications" while it is the somewhat off flying time of the year. I have been running a auto "who knows what" zone alternator for almost 500 hours. I had to pick what I could at a local auto parts shop when I lost my alternator while going to OSK in 97. I think that 500 hrs is enough for a alternator that cost $55.00.

I have the B&C linier voltage regulator, so I want to stay with a alternator without a built in regulator.

I can afford more than $55.00 ;-) Any ideas as to a "airworthy" auto unit. I have the large AS sheave on the existing alternator.

      Thanks for the attention,

      TEC
