One of my friends has an XP on his RV. It backfired and blew the entire
bottom out of the oil pan. I saw the pieces. Very stiff plastic with
no web reinforcements. I now know of two with the same malady.
Superior had bragged that the molded oil pan allowed improved air flow
to the intake and was polished. It is also very light. Unfortunately
not strong enough.

The person that called, did not give any details, but since it is going
to be an issue with the whole XP line, it is the same sump that is used
in the other models currently in production.

Anyone know what that is?

The problem is with the sump. It is an issue which involves a part
failing to do it's job during an event like multiple backfires of the
engine.

Are they using a carbon fiber sump? I have heard of problems with some
of these sumps cracking if a back fire occurs.

I'd go for "Now and Then", so far its been "Never Shipping".

You may recall from a few months back my concerns about too much lift (and
too high a stall speed) on my Wingco canard. I had installed shims on the
torsion tabs to reduce the incidence by about ? of a degree (I thought); and
found that it didn?t help much. The folks at the factory said I should not
reduce it more than a degree, and suggested installing VGs on the wing.

I installed the VGs over the span in front of the ailerons, and then double
checked the canard incidence. Turned out that I had only reduced it by
about ? a degree. So with some more grinding and adjusting I further
reduced the incidence to about 1 degree (which happens to be quite close to
two stir stick thicknesses under the incidence gauge at the leading edge, as
suggested by Scott Swing). The plane now handles better, stalls at 68-70
knots, and flies at 195 KIAS (210 KTAS) with the elevator trailing edge
about ? to 1? up and some trim to spare (CG about middle of the box).

I?m happy! This is now a very nice handling airplane.

Happy Holidays to all!

I had the Matco rotors ground true on a Blanchard grinder at a local machine
shop, and took a sanding block and some 180 grit to just surface the pads.
Did some conditioning on the taxiway and a couple of high speed taxis; then
took it easy on them for the first few landings. Today I applied them more
firmly; and the shudder that used to be there is gone - at least for now.

Happy Holidays,

Al
