REFLECTOR: Reflector Digest, Vol 27, Issue 126- blocked rudder conduits

I had the same problem with my Wingco/Shaw wings. I tried supergluing the
strands of the end of the rudder cable together and turning it in my drill
thru the conduit, but it just frayed. I got a sturdier wire and ground a
point on it. I passed it as far as I could, measured it and cut a small
access hole beneath it. Turned out it had cut thru the sidewall of the
conduit at a curve. I reinserted and repeated the process 2 or three times
before I managed to get it to the winglet, where it popped out about an inch
from where I had been digging for it. It was a huge frustration and a big
waste of time. They gave me a set of canard tips (which were not included at
the time) to make up for it.

Good luck!

Can you get a stiff wire in there, like piano wire?
Find a friend with some telco equipment, or a networking guy. They may
have a cable finder.

Run the piano wire in as far as it goes. Attach the transmitter, then
find the other end of the wire with the receiver.

I'm starting a mod to my airplane after 500+hrs of happy flying and have
some stuff I'll be getting rid of.

1--three blade performance propellor
2--Navaid auto pilot
3--Terra nav/com and indicator (no GS)

If any one is interested before I put in on some bulletin boards for sale,
send me an email.

Dave,

How expensive is this stuff, and where would one acquire some of it?

If it's no more expensive than fiberfrax it may have application here.
However, I suspect that going beyond the fiberfrax & stainless sheet is
probably going to the point of diminishing returns. After all, the aileron
control cables pass through the engine area. If you have an engine fire
beyond the capacity of the fiberfrax/SS to resist, you are probably going to
run out of options real quick, anyway. Firesleeve on the aileron push-pull
cables is a step in the right direction, but the aileron bellcrank attach
brackets are bolted to the fiberglass wing roots, which are going to burning
off pretty quick in a big fire.

Another material to use is Nextel high temp ceramic fabric. It's good for
3000 deg. F. But get it washed. It comes with a sizing on it. But if you
check you can get it washed. I started using it over 20 yrs ago. I used it
for making an inductive oven for processing metals. It's very flexible and
can be epoxies into your cowling as well for exhaust shielding. LLNL did
some extensive testing on it related to engine firewalls and found it to be
the best material you could use.

Kurt:

Nomex is only needed for the first fire.

I would suggest Nomex not be deleted.

Kurt;

I got the fiberfrax from A.S. and S.; and the .020 SS from a local metals
shop for a whole lot less than the nomex. Worth checking.

So, let me get this right.... the NEW stuff is fiberfrax and .20
stainless..... what is the thickness of the old stuff. Have to admit... it
does look nicer. .

see what happens when you take forever to build...... all kinds of new stuff
happens.

Kurt

Just like I said, FiberFrax and .20 stainless...

Kurt, here's a link to a pic on Rich's website showing
how nice the thicker SS looks:
