.  He also believes that the gas spring could have been a factor and was due
for replacement, a mother bear job.  I've heard they are only good for a few
years ???  

 

A factor in what way?  Does he think it may have seized?

  Normally the gas spring serves only one function; and that is to push the
linkage over-center in the case of no hydraulic pressure.  It serves no
function in getting the gear down.  It does actually compress a bit earlier
in the stroke, but the force is overcome by a large margin by the weight of
the gear dropping.

 

Boy, the combination of Dave's and Paul's recent experience is enough to
make us all feel bad.  My sympathies.
