Kurt,
Any hint that the pilot was on freq with center or with the A-10 group when whatever happened, happened?
Do the tapes show any possibility of "fox and hound" flying with the A-10's?
All of the facts indicate this was a well built, well maintained, and time-tested proven reliable aircraft with normal stall behavior.
The pilot was a lead (professional) test pilot with tons of flight experience, though not so much with props. He completed the V. flight transition training program. He was a "good stick". If engine failure was a factor, this pilot certainly would have had the skills and coolness to fly the aircraft to the ground, yet the info I see seems to indicate a near vertical descent. Wx was good (VMC). This is so perplexing.

More pieces to the puzzle:..
According to what I have dug up, the eye witness to the crash was a pilot. He saw the Velocity fly over and said the engine was running rough. He then saw the aircraft make 2 tight descending spirals then hit the ground Very hard.
Asked if it looked like 360 degree turns as if trying to find a landing spot, the witness apparently said no.
damage to aircraft, destroyed.
The Velocity also told the center that he would stay on Center frequency while working in the MOA.
Probably raises more questions than it answers, but I thought I'd share what I found.
Kurt
