REFLECTOR: Rudder deflection - again

Al,
I get around 2 1/2" and 4" on my XL. I would not
describe my brakes as "hard" so that is probably the
difference - sounds like you're being penalized for
having solid brakes...
Here's another option (and don't get me wrong, I like
the mod Kurt used):
To get the above numbers, I re-drilled the rudder
connection point on the rudder horn 1/2" - 3/4" closer
to the rudder. I was already using newer AN hardware
(bolt) to connect the rudder cable to the horn which
made this a pretty simple operation.
A few other notes:
Make sure you have enough clearance in you rudder
hinge line gaps to accommodate the additional throw -
otherwise you can easily chip your paint - don't ask
me how I know... Just slip some folded sandpaper in
the gap w/ the rudder deflected and sand back any
problem areas.
Also, I fabricated some small external rudder stops on
the outboard side of the winglets. These were not to
limit throw, but on the ground the wind can (read as
will, and hard) deflect the rudders until the gap is
closed. This will happen even with a few coils removed
from the rudder return springs in the rudders. This
was mainly to prevent cosmetic damage but since you
just painted your plane and are all too familiar with
the that effort...
