REFLECTOR: Altimiter/Transponder

John,

I have a RMI altimeter/air speed which is also an encoder. My transponder
is a Terra 250D. I did the initial calibration on the RMI. I used a water
manometer for air speed and set the altimeter by setting it to a known
altitude on the ramp. This however, doesn't meet the legal requirement that
must be done by a certified instrument shop. When I had my instruments
certified they did not require re-calibration which validates my method. I
also have a gadget called a Monroy Traffic Watch that will display what my
transponder is squawking. A flashing ATC light doesn't guarantee the
transponder works. The Traffic Watch is not connected directly to the
transponder but picks up the transponder signal on it's own antenna.
