Yes, if a fuel pump does not have an internal bypass it is standard practice
to provide a bypass with a check valve.

Subject: REFLECTOR: 18 PSI Fuel Pump
I found a reasonable priced racing fuel pump ( Aeromotive 11203) that
provides 18 PSI with a max fuel flow of 80 GPH. I only need 35 GPH but
the PSI is right on.
The only catch is you can't pump through it like a Weldon or Duke pump.
Would it be OK to plumb a one way valve parallel to the pump to allow
fuel to flow using the mechanical pump when the Aeromotive pump is
turned off?
Scott
