REFLECTOR: Zinc Chromate vs. Zinc Oxide

I have some parts that I need to prime, and I know that zinc chromate has
been the primer of choice for years, but due to the chromate supposedly
being a carcinogen, is not as popular. AS&S lists zinc oxide right alongside
zinc chromate and says that they're fine for aluminum and steel. (I have
some steel I want to prime.) My local paint store can't get zinc chromate,
so I asked them to order a can of zinc oxide. I checked out the label this
morning and it says that it's for aluminum, magnesium, and other non-ferrous
materials. When I read that, I interpreted it as meaning "no-steel"; steel
is ferrous, isn't it?
So should I order a can of zinc chromate from AS&S, or go back and get the
can of zinc oxide? Thanks for your help!
