You caught me. Mine is definitely the "old" design. I just ASSUMED it was
still being done that way, since builders are still complaining of the same
problem.

The gusset should work, as long as the part that actually pushes the button is
no more than 2 or 3 inches from the pivot.

Sounds like it's right on the edge of being too far from the pivot point. Mine
works every time. That little bugger takes a lot of force to push. 

Come to think of it, the best answer might be an easier-to-push sequence
valve.
