REFLECTOR: Xenon HID landing light

Kent,

Note that, compared to the 100-watt incandescent tractor headlight that passes as a standard landing light, heat production will be much reduced. The HID bulbs convert far more energy to light, whereas an incandescent bulb turns MOST of that energy into heat. That's why the HID lamps are only 35 watts, but produce about 5 times as much light as the 100-watt incandescent!

The price of these babies is what gives me pause! However, their long life means that you can gain that initial investment back by avoiding bulb replacements.

I have also heard that they make a poor daytime recognition light, since the light color is a good match for sunlight - it tends to blend into the blue sky.

Thank you, Christopher, for your update. I hope to switch to an HID soon.

Have you run your new light on the ground for 10 minutes (about the time it would take to enter the pattern and taxi) to see how hot the surrounding lay ups get? That's the only thing holding me back.

I made the installation and just flew it this Wednesday night. Wow! This is an impressive light.
