Joel, 

 

I had the same issue with my 173FG. YOu have to make at least a 2" hole,
then elongate the sides so the cross tube will fit through. Mine is
about 2" for/aft, but a little over 3" side to side. I made it as small
as I could, and have to slide in one side of the cross tube (with the
gear angled to the side), then straighten it out and slide in the other
side. 

 

A small cover plate is then siliconed over the hole to close it up.
