The default for windows update is to download any updates and notify you
about the install. You can change that option to

a) Not do anything at all,

b) look for updates and ask you if you would like to download

c) download automatically and ask you to update.

Now there are also other software that does the same thing. Norton or other
virus programs will download new virus updates and such. Or you could have
a virus or some spyware. There are some free spyware apps that you can
download to check also. One more thing to check. if you have installed a
lot of programs or downloaded a bunch of stuff or do a lot of things, maybe
a defrag of the harddrive would help.
