Richard, I assume you have a diaphragm type mechanical pump on the Franklin.
If you had a leak in the suction line leading to the mechanical fuel pump,
it will pull in air rather than the heavier fuel, and the carb can empty
causing the engine to quit. When you turned on the electic pump, it filled
the carb and the engine restarted. Just make sure there are no leaks by
pressurizing the system.
