Subject: REFLECTOR: Tragic day

A tragic day - a friend lost. Dan Patch, who had flown his varieze for 24
years, was the safety officer of our local EZ-squadron (canard aircraft
club) crashed yesterday on approach to Brown field in San Diego. Dan has
done a lot of teaching of formation flying and was a very experienced pilot.
He was on approach with another varieze. All I know is the words of his
wife's e-mail.

"I am grieved to inform you that on Saturday Aug. 11th, Dan Patch crashed
his beloved VariEze on approach to Brown Field in San Diego, and was killed.
He apparently went below another eze that he was flying with and didn't make
it. Dan flew his Eze for 24 years and was a safety officer in the San Diego
Eze Squadron. He did a lot of work trying to teach safe formation flying,
and recently returned from a trip to the Oshkosh fly-in, where he had flown
with the other craft the entire way. Just before that he had spent about six
month repainting the fuselage and creating new farings for the main landing
gear, so I am sure that when he flies his plane up above, it will still look
pretty nice. Due to his experience, we can only explain this as a tragic
accident."

Our sympathies are with his wife, son, and daughter.
