REFLECTOR: PITCH TRIM TRAVEL

Tom,

I've been flying for 4 years and have 550 hours on my Velocity XL RG with an IO 540 and MT Constant speed prop. With two people in the front, about 400 lbs., we need almost full down trim, (elevator up pushing the nose down), to maintain level cruise at 185 KTAS, 15.5 GPH, 5500 MSL, 25.0 inches of MP. I have a little more trim for full power decent. If I'm alone in the plane and try a full power decent, I would need a little forward stick pressure.

On take off I have the trim set a little back from center which gives me a climb out of 120 knots. On landing I use full aft trim and come over the fence at 90 KNTS.

I have a relatively light trim spring and am able to make full range of motion if the trim motor were to fail.

Hope this answers your question.

Forgive me for being so thick ... but I am getting all kinds of different opinions. I need to know from someone WHO IS FLYING ...

Exactly how much “Elevator Up” travel (from neutral) do you need to trim in when flying two people up front at cruise.

When landing, I know you probably need pretty good “Elevator Down” (up trim) for final and landing ... but I REALLY need to know what to expect at cruise. Does the Velocity want to pitch up? Causing the need to “trim down” – if so, how much?

Thanks for you patience and information.

Tom
