REFLECTOR:Confession Week!!!

Here is one of mine...

I have the "Alan Shaw" wings. I received the Winglets already attached
and the rudders detached and taped together. When I unpacked, I did not
notice any markings on the rudders as to which one went with which
winglet. So I "dry fitted" them to figure them out. First try, one of
them mated perfectly to the winglet but the other one had a large gap.
I swapped them out and both of them showed about the same amount of gap.
That got me thinking. "Airplanes are supposed to symmetric."

I verified that the outboard had flat profile and inboard had cambered
profile. Happy with my detective work, I proceeded to pot the rudder
horns, attached hinges, etc and finished my rudder installation.

It was about a year later, I noticed the bull-nosed bottom edge of the
rudders. The bull-nose was on the inboard side of the rudders while the
bottom of the winglet also had the same contour. Yes. I reversed the
rudders. Fortunately, the reversal did not appear to make a significant
difference in the winglet contours or the rudder position at neutral. I
decided to cover up the goof with micro.

Aw, I think we ought to have one week of confessions!!!

All of us have done something dumb that we will NEVER do again, so fess
up,
maybe some of us can avoid doing it the FIRST time!!!

Like, I installed a 7" x 7" Fram air filter for a 85 Camaro in an air
box
without enough support under it. After 20 hours of test flying I was
horrified to see it crumpled down into the cone shaped air box. I
removed
it and thanked my lucky stars that it hadn't completely choked off the
airflow. I think it happened one day that I got caught in a light
shower
which probably wetted the paper element.

I've got more but I'll wait to see if anybody else wants to join in this
week of confessions!!!!

| Confession is cathartic. We have all done something like it but I am
| not ready to confess yet.
