REFLECTOR:Firewall penetrations (was Control Cables)

Ronnie,

I think there are a couple of problems with your approach of connecting the
alternator to the starter hot terminal. First, you should use a fusible
link to make the connection. This is to prevent a fire should the
alternator fail in short circuit mode. I have never met an aircraft that
didn't have a circuit breaker in the alternator battery connection. If you
want an ammeter it would have to be wired into the battery lead which means
that starter motor load would go through the ammeter. A 60 amp device would
be fried on the first startup. My advice would be to do it the way that Jim
Agnew suggests.
