REFLECTOR: Light Weight Fat Wire

For those who have not yet pulled in the #2 wires between the battery in the nose and the starter in the tail, Eric Jones now has made available an attractive alternative to the standard mil-spec #2 copper. These are copper-clad aluminum cables with the electrical conductivity of #2 silver, but with the weight of #6 copper. Because the outside of every strand is actually copper, the connections are made the same as for big copper cables; typically by soldering the terminals on. Airbus uses a LOT of this type of wire in their airliners, which is how Eric was able to find a wire manufacturer who was already set up to manufacture the stuff.

Swapping out the nearly 40 feet of #2 copper that typically goes into a Velocity with 1/0 "Super-2-CCA" will save about 3.5 pounds. Not earthshattering, but not exactly trivial!

See http://www.periheliondesign.com/fatwires.htm for more details.
