REFLECTOR: Nose gear fork

Keith,
C'mon now, pretty basic stuff- we all know that they load tested the wings
and canard- I would not have bought one if they did not- I have seen the
pictures of the testing- also the real-world wing-into-telephone pole test
so well documented by the DEA gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling too. Some
things must be tested by the designers and manufacturers- we can all look up
specs for hardware, so testing not needed there, but something basic like
landing gear needs to be tested, even by experimental kit manufacturers,
before you can put it out there on the market and charge people for it- that
is just good business practices- I am sure that Duane and the gang did some
static testing on the gear, beefed up the strut tubing (and I remember they
had a heat treat problem at some time with that that they addressed although
I do not know who paid for that exactly since it didn't apply to me) they
have re-designed the wrapping on the legs as well.... I am not bitching if
the actual replacement cost is $50, (but for some reason $200 seems to come
to mind) but I sure would be BIG TIME if I was out at Podunk muni sans nose
gear and with prop damage to my sweet MT, only to find out that "oh yea,
everyone is replacing all of those since they have had an unacceptable
failure rate"..... too basic of a problem for me to swallow- I would have
drop tested the hell out of a loaded mockup to see what failed if I were in
charge..... but I am not, Duane is, and god bless him for providing all of
us with such a great aircraft, so I will just submit my $50 and go
flying....

Alex

Alex & Jim,

In an airplane, almost ANY part can kill or injure you in a particular set
of circumstances. However, if you expect rigorous engineering analysis of
every part, you will either have to do such analysis yourself or buy only
high $$ certified aircraft parts that are type certificated for your
certificated airframe. In other words, stay away from experimental aircraft
unless you bring the engineering horsepower to the project. According to
the FAA rules, the Builder is responsible for the design and fabrication,
not the kit supplier. It is highly unrealistic to expect a kit manufacturer
to provide the same level of engineering assurance that you would get with a
new type-certificated design. However, we are offered a reasonably
well-proven kit design at a reasonable price, compared to the
type-certificated world.

If Raytheon were to come up with an improved gear fork design for the
Bonanza, do you think that they would sell the new part to Bonanza owners
for $50? How about $100? $200? $400? I would be very surprized if the
STC, part, and shop labor to install such a part would leave you any change
from a $1,000 Bill! In that light, Velocity's policy looks mighty
customer-friendly!!
