This is not a confession but a word of caution as we can all learn from
someone else,s mistake.
This week in my neighbour's hangar, a friend of mine was just finishing his
final retract test on his newly finished P51 replica when his beloved
project slipped off the jack on one side which busted the whole wing in
front of the spar, broke two blades off his new 3-blade prop and busted the
oil pan on his newly overhauled engine (Ranger?).
The emotional repercussion is as important as the financial and labour
setback. He may never finish his project now, he is so upset.
. Just two days before, I had my FG Velocity on jacks (under the spars) to
change my brake pads. I do this every year to pack the bearings during the
annual. Maybe, I have been lucky so far. My jacks only have a small pad on
top (6" X 9"). My friend had a well padded 16" X 16" surface between the
jack and the wing. It went right through the leading edge of the wing once
it slipped off the spar area.
So if you have your plane on jacks make sure that the wheels (or wheel)
remaining on the floor are well chucked and that the airplane is tied down
to prevent lateral or fore-aft movement.
Cheers, Gilles
