I too am gonna use a rotary. Unlike Al, who is using the larger and somewhat
rare, 3 rotor 20b, I hope to use the new 13b Renesis (standard in the RX-8
and just under $6k new in the box)). It should produce around 230 hp
normally aspirated. I have a mount and a old engine core that I have been
playing with (well, not lately, I have been building). I just closed my
first strake this weekend and coated it with Jeffco to better handle the
alternate fuels (i.e. auto fuel).

There are a couple of forums with a great deal of info. One is hosted by
Paul Lamar (big time engineer type...worked on the Voyager project with the
Rutans) and the other forum is "Fly Rotary". Also, the biggest supplier for
aviation related rotary stuff is Tracy Crook. He sells a PSRU as well as
engine control units. Tracy has over 1300 hours on his RV with a rotary.
You can get the links from my builders page at www.LoneStarVelocity.com .

I saw one rotary Velocity on the EAA Centennial of Flight completions page.
I can't remember the name though. Also, there was a flying Velo, but after
two oil coolers failed, the Mrs. had the guy put in a Lycosarus (if I
understood correctly). Also, there are a couple of flying Cozy's out there.
A solid web page for info is John Slade's. His first flight was several
weeks ago. Again, more info on my web page. Look under "Rotary Engine"
link.

Finally, there is a Swiss company called "Mistral" that is developing a
Certified Rotary in conjunction with Embry-Riddle (ERAU). Their test plane
is a Piper. They too have had flight. If memory serves, the cost is in the
mid 20's. They are gonna market the experimental during development as they
try to prove it as a solid certified alternate to what is currently
available. They had a small write up in AOPA Pilot this month. FWIW.

All the best,

Chris

Has anyone ever put a rotary in a Velocity? Or has anyone researched
putting a rotary in a Velocity? Any pros or cons?

  Thanks,
  Joe
