I suddenly realized ... after some advice ... that the flywheel can only
attach one way (due to one enlarged hole).

Pull the top plug out of the number one cylinder. The cylinder number
is marked on the side of the case next to the cylinder. Or it is the
fwd right cylinder while sitting in the pilot seat. Pull the engine
through till you feel compression on the cylinder coming up. As you do
take a look at the back of the starter ring gear. It is marked so when
the centerline of the engine case is lined up with the TDC mark you are
number one TDC. That is with the top of the engine case.
You can also do it by lining up the mark on the front of the starter
ring gear with the punch mark on the face of the starter. You have to
look for the dot on the starter some times it is hard to see. Or in
most cases the mark on the ring gear is right behind the prop blade.
Always have the engine turning in the normal direction of rotation to
take out the gear back lash. Then slowly bring it up to your mark.
After putting it on the mark install your ignition device and don't move
the prop till everything is secured. All timing pins removed and
switches are off.

an IO-540.<<
Depending on model sometimes there are marks on the crank. line
up the TDC mark with the bottom case split. The engine I have now has a
0 (TDC) and a 22 degree mark. Line up the 22 degree mark and set the
mags. Nice. Not all engines have them on the crank though. Then you will
just have to break out the protracter.
