Yep. We use 3" numbers on the 540 Berkuts because our maximum "cruising"
speed is 178 knots.
At 2100 RPM.
Our top speed, wide open throttle on the deck, is a bit higher than
that. But the reg - 45.29(b)(1)(iii) - says:
(iii) Marks at least 3 inches high may be displayed on an aircraft for
which an experimental certificate has been issued under §21.191(d) or
21.191(g) for operating as an exhibition aircraft or as an amateur-built
aircraft when the maximum cruising speed of the aircraft does not exceed
180 knots CAS.
So as long as your cruising speed is less than 180 knots, you're fine. You
weren't planning on cruising any faster than that, were you? I mean, if
you open up the throttle any further you just burn more gas and go faster.
I never drive faster than 65 mph, either. :)
