REFLECTOR:M-20 Oil/Air separator

John,
My theory is that if BOTH the breather and the return line from an oil
separator are open to the same crankcase pressure, there is nothing to keep
the flow going in the direction intended through the lines. If the blowby
comes up the RETURN line, it may have more of a tendancy to carry the oil
vapor/droplets on through the separator and out the vent. However, if the
breather tube is wide open and the the return line is restricted to only
flow toward the engine by a check valve (and here the check valve was
proposed to be a PCV valve), then no airflow UP the return line would be
possible. All blowby must come up the breather line from the crankcase to
the separator, and thence overboard through the vent line, and any separated
oil would "leak" back toward the crankcase through the ckeck valve.
Of couse, another alternative would be to eliminate the return line entirely
in favor of a drain from the separator to a waste bottle. There have been
concerns that the condensed oil may also contain condensed water and other
contaminants that you really don't want to be putting back into your
crankcase. The waste bottle would have to be emptied fairly regularly,
which adds another maintenance task.
Keith
