Ooooooohhhh! (....dawn breaks!)

Thanks for the heads up Keith - I actually have halogen lights (55 =
watts) that can be switched on, flash together or alternate, slow or =
fast in my Maule's wings .....you are right...great for recognition but =
not so good to light up the runway @ night. I use them whenever I am in =
the circuit, on approach, or in haze.

Greg in Sydney.

  Greg,
The usual concept with the strake-mounted lights is recognition, not =
really landing/taxi lights. Therefore they are usually aimed at =
something on the order of 45 degrees off the nose. This puts the light =
right on anyone who may be on a converging path with you. Their =
effectiveness is increased by "wig-wag" flashing the recognition lights, =
since a steady light isn't as attention-getting as a flashing light.
It's also best to use halogen lights, rather than the whippy new HID =
lights, since the bright blue HID lights are about the same color as the =
sky, and hence less visible.
That's an interesting idea about adjusting the aim of the lights in =
flight. It might enable you to use them for both recognition lights and =
taxi lights. I'm not sure if the extra complexity and pilot distraction =
factor would be worth the benefit for me, though.
  Keith

    Hmmnn ...Alex,

Strake mounted lights eh? ...don't know if I have ever seen some of =
those? Have you a picture of your installation that I/we could view? =
Will they create light bounce off of the canard? What strength are you =
using? Are they inflight adjustable? (I often dream of using the auto =
electric side mirror remote adjustment units for such a purpose)

If anyone is interested- I have a set of molds for plexi light =
covers for strake mounted recognition/landing lights - the ones that a =
few of us are installing outboard of the tanks- I have already molded my =
covers with them, so don't need them anymore- I will give them to anyone =
who wants them.

      Alex
