Larry,

I'm electrically challenged but seems to me I've seen alternatives to =
reducing voltage/current that don't involve resistors. The name escapes =
me for the moment but I think it would be well worth your while cross =
posting this to the Aero-Electric list. I'll bet they come up with a =
workable solution.
