Professor Al, I like the way your mind works! I wish I was in the garage
next to you.

Chuck,

Before fixing your problem, determine whether you actually have one!
Clip

or safety-wire a thermocouple to the pitot and go fly on a cold day. If
the

heater can keep the pitot at 100 degrees Fahrenheit, you don't have a

problem. If it can't, a little insulation on the lower part (or reduce
the

extension out the nose) may do the trick with no electrical change.

Keith

I haven't followed this and had deleted most of the topic before I read
enough to realize I may have some marginally relevant info. I installed
a 24v pitot (AN 5813-1) made by Aero Instrument in the nose of my
Velocity. In my installation less than 2" of it is exposed, so it should
only need about half as much heat. It is insulated from the fiberglass
by one layer of Cool-Mat insulation.

Before I installed it I did some testing - connected it to a 12 volt
battery and first determined that it would not overheat the fiberglass
through 1 layer of Cool-Mat if turned on when not in flight; just
natural convection. It got very hot but through the layer of Cool-mat
it was just a bit too hot to touch. OK.

Then checked it with while running 40 degree water over it. It stayed
quite warm. I concluded it would work just fine.

Al
