Hey Al, lighten up.  We don't need the smart ASS comments.

 

Vacuum compared to the front of the airplane.  Some have observed that
the manifold pressure drops when the intake air is from INSIDE the cowl.
Just take a look the engine's position compared to a tractor.  The
tractor faces the wind and gets close to pitot pressure - at 175 knots
this is approximately 20 inches of water PRESSURE.  On the back end of
the plane, there would be a opposite pressure (often called VACUUM).
This negative pressure (often called VACUUM) is approximately 20 inches
of water.  40 inches of water - is approximately 1.5 psi.  

 

It would be awfully nice if folks would engage their brain before
putting their mouth in gear!!!! 

 

 

Whoa, hey; easy now.  Sorry if I was misunderstood.  My response was
reaction to Don Georges remark; not you.  It seemed like an invalid
excuse to me.

 

Again I ask - where is the pressure differential that causes the
additional oil consumption?  Aside from whether we disagree on the cowl
pressures.

 

And you will generally not have anything near full dynamic pressure in
the cowling of a tractor; the air is flowing through; I just guessed
about 5" h20.  And at the cowling in the rear of our planes there is
significant pressure recovery, so we may get 3-5" h20 below ambient. 

 

          It would be awfully nice if folks would engage their brain
before putting their mouth in gear!!!!
