Hi Al,

I've got a Turrentine normally aspirated 20B sitting on the garage =
floor I'm going to put in my standard Velocity (Actually it's an SUV =
that I'm putting the second door on to make it a standard.) -- Pretty =
much the same exact package as Tracy Crook's new engine because I've got =
everything he makes to hang on it the same as his. The question I have =
on exhaust, since you are way ahead of me here is why you did a rear =
exit rather than an "S" curve and a front exit. Is there just too =
little room for the extra piece of pipe, the three pound weight penalty, =
or the mechanical problem of safely hanging the forward facing exhaust =
that directed your decision?
Oh, by the way, thanks for having the nerve to introduce the rotary =
option to the Reflector :-) A lot of guys have got flamed for much less =
than that on here :-) Once we're closer to a firewall back package (and =
we're getting there pretty quickly) even the most critical piston =
advocates are going to realize we have pretty close to the reliability =
of a turbine and the efficiency of a piston all in one engine. -- But =
that's a discussion for another day :-)

Looks GREAT! Some questions just because I'm curious and fascinated =
with

the rotary solution. So how many power pulses per crank revolution =
and

prop revolution? What will be the cruise RPM? So will the exhaust be

clocked to the prop? Is that possible with a rotary? I have been =
told

that rotary engines have a hot exhaust, will that be a challenge to

accommodate? What prop are you using?

  Jerry

It is the same as a 6-cyclinder engine with 3 power pulses for one =
turn of the output shaft. The re-drive ratio here is 2.17 : 1 so there =
are 6.5 pulses per rev of the prop. The rotors turn at 1/3 the speed of =
the output shaft and each rotor fires 3 times (3 faces on each rotor) =
for each complete revolution.

Cruise PRM will typically be 2300 - 2400 prop or about 5000-5200 on =
engine shaft. No way to clock the prop to the exhaust pulse. Yes, =
rotary engines have hot exhaust, about 150 higher than your usual =
vibrating, piston . . ah, whoops; certified aircraft engine. Yes it is =
a challenge to accommodate, but then a custom engine installation isn't =
anything if it isn't challenging. I'm using a 6" prop extension (I can =
do that because my total engine package CG is only about 16" from the =
firewall) which will get it back a bit from the exhaust pipe, and I will =
have a yet-to-be-determined diffuser/deflector at the end of the pipe - =
and then we'll see.

  I'm using a 66" x 85 pitch, 3-blade Catto prop until a =
reasonably-priced, reasonable weight, reliable CS prop happens (I'm not =
holding my breath). Catto prop is light weight and only $1650.

I'll know a lot more when it flies; always next year.

  Al
