REFLECTOR:540 engine prices

Hello Brett,
The Velocity XL was designed around the Lycoming IO-540D (260hp) engine.
The "D" is an excellent choice - offers great performance and economy - many
call the engine "bullet proof". Jean P. installed the first IO-540K,
300-hp, which turned out to be a big success. The 300-hp offers better
climb rates and about a 20 knot increase in cruise speed. The Continental
IO-550, 310-hp offers even more "kick in the pants" performance. This is
one of the few aircraft/engine combinations that as a pilot, you can point
the nose upwards towards a hole in the clouds and not slow down for a
moment. Acceleration during take off is like that of a twin-engine
aircraft.
Someone mentioned performance modifications to the "D" as an option - and it
is ... to a point. Higher compression pistons add a lot of stress to an
engine and make it more difficult to cool. I've talked to several engine
shops about this - some flatly refuse to install anything more than 9:1
compression because they think it spells warranty trouble. Other shops
don't mind making major performance changes. Find a shop or experienced
person that you trust for more information on this.
Now ... if we could only find an inexpensive and reliable propeller
reduction drive for the Allison 250 ....!
Scott B.
