Hi Kevin,
My mechanic AI suggested while I was building that if the engine is =
cooled adequately, the oil will be cool too. I.e.., if the engine is =
running hot, the oil temps will be hot too. My engine has run cool and =
hence oil temps have been great.
I think you will get better cooling if you will put the bottom baffles =
on, not only the ones that go between the two cylinders but also the =
ones that go from the Velocity supplied plenum to meet the center =
baffles. Look at the bottom picture on =
http://home.sprintmail.com/~rolandbrown/page55.html . As I mentioned =
earlier, these should wrap around the bottom of the cylinders and such =
that they leave a gap of a 1.5" opening at the bottom of the cylinders. =
It doesn't look like it would allow enough air to go by the cylinders =
and provide enough cooling - but it works! I got the gap size from a =
Beech Sundowner in our hanger with a Lyc 360 engine. I agree your =
higher compression pistons will add some heat for sure.

Thanks for looking and your suggestions. The outlet scoop for the oil =
cooler is exactly what Velocity supplied and extends below the fuselage =
to create the reverse scoop. On our last flight (approx. 2 hours), =
temps were below max even though it was hotter outside (later in the =
day). I attribute this to the air going through the wire duct cooling =
the oil lines and the engine beginning to get broken in. I do have the =
lower engine baffles in place (they came installed on the engine from =
Lycon). I also think that the higher compression pistons in my engine =
produce more heat.

Even though I'm below max temps now, I will most likely install the =
VGs at the engine & oil NACA scoops.

Re your oil temps, I was looking at your photo gallery and it appears =
that the outlet your oil cooler doesn't to be seem to be much of a =
"reverse scoop". My single oil cooler is working great see =

ever over 220 and this is only in the climb, most of the time 200-210. =
CHT's are staying under 360. Perhaps your temps will come down with =
some more hours, but mine have been cool from the start. Also, make =
sure your engine baffles have the lower baffles installed so that air is =
forced around the bottom of the cylinders. The space between the bottom =
baffles under the cylinders is only about 1.5 inches wide. Looks =
restrictive but it works!

After 3 years and 4 months of building, this past weekend Mike =
Pollock, Velocity owner and test pilot, made the first flights of our =
Velocity, N111VX. My wife and I flew chase with Milt Mersky and Dave =
Bertram in Milt's & Mike's Velocity.

Saturday 6/28: The outside temp was about 90 (it was morning) (it's =
hot in Scottsdale, AZ now). CHTs were high (over 400) on taxi. She =
flew beautifully for about 15 minutes over the airport but the oil temp =
was slowly rising. At 245 degrees, Mike decided to land. The lowest =
oil temp on descent was 230. Mike said that the wire duct was quite =
hot. CHTs were high but under 425 in flight. Oil reached around 256 =
and CHTs reach around 467 by the time Mike taxied back and shutdown. We =
were expecting high temps until the engine was broken in but the oil =
temp was concerning. Duane Swing suggested that a small NACA scoop in =
the fuselage at the forward end of the pilot wire duct that holds both =
oil lines would help by keeping the lines cooler in flight. We put in =
the NACA scoop (or hole for the time being) and the next morning we flew =
again. CHTs were below 425 (mostly around 370-380) and oil temp was =
below 245 the entire time. Between the engine slowing breaking in and =
the small NACA for the oil lines all temps were in check. We flew for =
almost 2 hours in the local practice area around 6,000'. Mike did slow =
flight, stalls, steep turns and flutter tests - everything went fine - =
she flew beautifully.
