Scott,

The best automotive alternators are made by Nippon Denso.  I don't know that
you can get a 60-amp-plus with internal regulator for under $100, though.
B&C Products takes N-D alternators, removes the internal regulator,
precision balances them, and sells them as the most reliable aircraft
alternators available.  I just ordered one of their L-60 (60-amp)
alternators for the IO-540 I'm having built up.  These are not cheap, but as
you point out, reliability is worth quite a bit, at least from time to time!
