I thought it might be helpful to provide another data point for people =
regarding insurance. =20
I requested a liability only quote from Aviation & Marine and AUA back =
in late March. I couldn't get two quotes since Kevin Grys of Aviation =
Marine had put one in and the underwriter wouldn't let Pam provide a =
quote as well. I believe this has been discussed on the reflector. So =
I got one quote. I had previously had insurance from Aviation & Marine =
when we first tested our plane and wasn't expecting much trouble. I got =
a quote for $500 for liability only with a requirement for an additional =
5 hours fo flight training with a Velocity approved CFI.
However, I didn't get any paperwork from Aviation & Marine. So I =
started to follow up and follow up and....... Finally I got a =
application form (all of this took about 45 days to get to this point). =
I filled out the form and followed up again and again. Three days =
before I left for Sebastian, I was told I needed 10 hours of flight =
training with a Velocity certified CFI.
Needless to say, I was pretty upset (I live in Arizona and there isn't a =
CFI certified instructor in the West at this point - Mack has had some =
health problems and doesn't have a medical). I didn't know if I could =
get 10 total hours with Nathan (he was on vacation and I couldn't =
confirm his availability). I couldn't change my vacation and airline =
plans at that late date. I was faced with the possibility of having to =
make two trips to fill this requirement.
After talking with Kevin and explaining that I already had 8 hours of =
Velocity training with a VC CFI, I was told the additional requirements =
were because I hadn't been flying recently and they wanted both =
proficiency and currency.
I explained to Kevin that I had flown 10 hours in the last 60 days (in =
preparation for Velcoity flight training - this is what Nathan requires) =
and I would have an additional 5 hours as a result of the work in =
Sebastian. I had also recently had a Wings certification. I questioned =
how much more recent flying experience they wanted. I asked if the =
total Velocity time needed to be 10 hours or 10 hours recently.
After much negotiation by Kevin, on my behalf to the underwriters, a =
solution was reached. Since I had gotten my Wings, 10 hours of recent =
flying time and would have 5 hours of proficiency training in a =
Velocity, I would be permitted to get insurance, if I did the following: =
1) sent them a note confirming that I had gotten the 5 hours flight =
training at Velocity and 2) would fly solo in my Velocity for an =
additional 5 hours before taking any passengers. I agreed to do this.
So, this is just a heads up. They are getting quite serious about =
having 10 hours of Velocity flight time and recent flying experience. I =
was VERY glad that I followed the requirements Nathan had set up for =
those coming to Sebastian for flight training (he sent them to me in an =
email) since that helped in the negotiations. I believe this, along =
with the fact that I would have 10 hours total time in a Velocity (with =
a mix of recent and not very recent) time, allowed me to get insurance.
Also as an FYI - I have 192 hours total time and 79 complex. =20
Also - during my discussions with Kevin, he suggested I try Avemco. He =
thought they didn't have the same requirements and it would be easier to =
get insurance. He said it would be more expensive but they billed on a =
quarterly basis so I could get insurance, fly for a bit and then convert =
over to A&M. I really didn't think I had the time to get that done =
considering how long it had taken me to get to my current point. I =
didn't look into it but it might be another alternative for people.
I hope this help people who are in the throes of planning their =
insurance needs for their first flights and beyond. I'd hate for anyone =
to get the surprise I did.
P.S. - I did my training with Nathan and he is excellent!!!!! He is =
easy going but makes his points very well. He is not constantly in your =
ear. His style made me feel very at ease. If you do elect to go to =
Sebastian for training, I think you'll enjoy the experience. My flying =
was substantially improved over my previous experiences and I attribute =
that to Nathan's skill as an instructor. He imparts both knowledge and =
confidence...........
