REFLECTOR:Tachometer Pulse Generator Options and Warning - FYI

I thought about taking this approach, but decided that I would just connect my tach to one or the other - I chose the Jeff Rose.

There is very little RPM drop cutting either ignition off. The one I would worry most about is the Slick Magneto and I can monitor
it with the tach. This is working out very well. With a 4 cylinder, there is a noticeable roughness and engine sound difference
when a plug is fouled or a cylinder isn't firing correctly. I have experienced this a number of times with our C172 and I don't
need to see an RPM drop to know there is a problem, when 1/4 of the power drops out, you know it!

With a IO540, I would think this roughness is probably less noticeable.

But thanks for the info, I'm keeping your note in case I change my mind and decide I need to monitor the RPMs when the Jeff Rose
screws up.

Ronnie

| For those of you not aware of the Tachometer Pulse
| Generator Options other than direct Mag hookup or the Hall
| Effect sensor for the flywheel I offer the following from
| Westach Engineering as alternatives. Both require three
| wire hookups, +5-12 V DC, Ground, and the signal output to
| the Tach..
|
| The 303DH2T is a polycarbonate housing that screws directly
| on the Tach drive coupling (make sure you order the correct
| drive tang) and is a very easy installation. Warning, if
| you have the new Airborne (215CC/216CW air pumps replace
| the popular Air- borne 211CC/212CW pumps. The new air pumps
| feature finned housing which provides 90% more housing
| surface) on Lycoming engines then this unit may not have
| enough clearance to screw on.
|
| Wectach's best kept secret is the 720-14RB pickup which is
| a a beautiful brass (looks like a hex head pipe plug with a
| lead wire) that screws directly into the LOWER plug on the
| Mag and switches via the Mag magnets. This also makes an
| easy installation. These have to be ordered by Mag make
| and possibly type.
|
| The person at Westach that really understands tachs and
| these units is Pete.
